(Still searching, btw, for that block of time which would allow me to continue my Call to Action — on which there’s been damn little action, btw. You’d think SOMEONE could post the link to some other blogs, or to DU, or something, wouldn’t you? Oh well.)

Gratuitous sexism:

They were such obvious WH hos, I’d have expected them to be wearing stiletto heels and thongs.

Ah! so much for the oft-trotted out defense (at DU) that “whore” isn’t sexist since it can apply equally to so many men these days. Sorry, folks, as this exemplifies, you can NOT divorce it from its original denotation; you will never be able to divorce it from its original misogynist denotation.

This has the same effect, I think (proves exactly the opposite of what the porn defenders dlaim). If being so called “sex-positive” (to borrow a phrase) were all that upstanding and honorable and positively appreciated by society at large, we wouldn’t be snickering over McCain offering his wife for the topless and sometimes (nearly) bottomless little biker babe contest, now, would we?

McCain Gaffes, Volunteering Wife For Topless Contest

“I was looking at the Sturgis schedule, and noticed that you had a beauty pageant, so I encouraged Cindy to compete,” McCain told an audience at the rally. “I told her with a little luck, she could be the only woman to serve as both the First Lady and Miss Buffalo Chip.”

I dunno. Call me crazy. I just think the title, “Miss Buffalo CHIP” shoulda warned him off saying anything from the start. Dontcha agree?

3. Katie Couric claims she’s a victim of sexism

And I believe she is.

US newsreader Katie Couric claims she is a victim of sexism
America’s highest paid newsreader has claimed she is a victim of
sexism and that discrimination based on gender is more prevalent
– and tolerated – in US society than racism.

Katie Couric, the CBS evening news anchor who earns a reported $15 million a year, compared herself to failed presidential candidate Senator Hillary Clinton in an interview with Israeli newspaper Ha’aretz.

“I find myself in the last bastion of male dominance, and realising what Hillary Clinton might have realised not long ago: that
sexism in the American society is more common than racism, and certainly more acceptable or forgivable,” Miss Couric told
the paper as she covered Senator Barack Obama’s Middle East tour.

“In any case, I think my post and Hillary’s race are important steps in the right direction.”

Ms Couric, who in 2006 became the first woman to present a primetime network news broadcast solo, has faced intensive
scrutiny not only of her job performance but her outfits and personal life since taking over the CBS Evening News.

And I know she’s right. Further, I believe that one of the reasons — not the only reason, not the main reason probably — that she has done so poorly is that people in this culture are more used to and therefore more comfortable with male voices for serious network news anchoring. This may or may not be something people are even aware of, or if they are aware of their own preference wouldn’t consider it sexist, but it is. The other reason she’s done poorly (not unlike Hillary) is that she had some whacky ideas about how to do the news.

If you read last night’s post on the subject, I hope you had a chance to sample some of the Comments to the PUMA blog because they reveal either some folks so politically naive they’re dangerous, or some folks who are seriously not on our side to start with, or some folks who are simply deranged. Or some combination thereof, I suppose.

Some of these folks clearly indicate plans to actively harm the party. Call me crazy, but my values definitely include “sense of fair play” among them so I think undermining a whole party out of spitefulness (that is, just because your candidate lost) doesn’t work for me at all. It’s worse than childish, it’s self-destructive. This isn’t some high school sports rivalry, this is life and death (just ask the families of over 4000 dead U.S. troops, not to mention the tens of thousands maimed and psychologically damaged for life, or the millions of Iraqis harmed — and all that’s just for starters!). I hope someone at DNC and/or the Obama campaign is monitoring these groups in a thorough and systematic way.
BTW, Darragh Murphy insists she’s always been a Democrat, (more…)

The best way to control the opposition is to lead it ourselves. — Lenin

PUMA (“Party Unity My Ass”) is purportedly a group of Hillary supporters who won’t give up. They want — well, I don’t know what they want. I’m not convinced they’re on our side at all. Here’s something terribly important that the whole WORLD needs to know. I don’t know about (some of) the women who consider themselves “members,” but the FOUNDER of PUMA is a McCain supporter:

I believe that the Republicans are cheerful rat-fuckers and therefore would not hesitate to set up a secretive operation of people running around claiming to be Clinton voters who are voting for McCain to keep the legend of the PUMAs alive. If you can convince people that there are PUMAs, then you accomplish two giant goals for the McCain campaign:

1) Creating the illusion that McCain is moderate enough to attract the votes of feminist Clinton supporters and
2) Reinforcing the narrative about how feminists are just hysterical bitches with no common sense who subsist on outrage, can’t act in their own self-interest because of their feminine-addled brains, and can safely be ignored.

Said founder is Darragh Murphy, whose single political contribution was in 2000 to the McCain campaign for $500. (more…)

I get a little annoyed with people who don’t know what they’re talking about but don’t have a clue that’s even a possibility, so proceed with abandon to mischaracterize something, thereby spreading ignorance around.

Here’s Marcia Pappas, apparently of New York NOW, and egalia of Tennessee Guerilla Women agreeing with her: (more…)

Goodness, tracking this phenomenon could be a full-time job.

I have to admit to shocked and delighted surprise at a wonderfully sensitive piece Nicholas Kristof wrote for the New York Times, saying basically that Obama ought to give a Sex speech (uh, could we call it gender??) like the Race speech he made, and then make a big play for women by making something like worldwide maternal mortality (death in childbirth, which stands at 1 per minute) part of his campaign. (I’m not all that crazy about this idea, but will leave it at that.)

In the process, Kristof makes some wonderful points, among them this one which so many of us women (feminists) have been trying to point out and so many Obama supporters as well as all the garden-variety neanderthal sexists have been either ignoring completely or ridiculing and denouncing (both standard tactics used against women and our concerns): (more…)

So, we visited this subject just the other day. I said that sometimes women will do things to even out the score that end up hurting themselves — engage in the proverbial “cutting off your nose to spite your face” syndrome, though I didn’t use those words.

Upon further reflection, I realize that these are the actions of the oppressed: (more…)

I can’t speak for other oppressed groups, but I do know when women have had enough, truly had enough, someone is likely to pay. And sometimes women are even willing to hurt themselves — or let me phrase that as “make a sacrifice” — in the process of bringing someone up short. I can’t imagine, for instance, that Lorena Bobbitt actually thought she’d get away with her crime. Or maybe she didn’t think that far ahead.

I’ve already noted that Clinton’s candidacy — and the unreasonable, outrageous misogyny and sexism she’s had to endure — have radicalized women and re-radicalized some of us aging boomer 2nd Wavers. Younger feminists have been affected as well. (more…)
