My name isn’t really Ann drist. It’s a little play on words, meant to make a point and grab attention.
In truth, I’m not a misandrist at all. I do not hate men, but I do hate sexism and sexists and unfortunately, that tends to gather up a lot of men in the net. And far too many women, alas. But I always am happy to work with “educable” sexists, and give them the benefit of the doubt. Sadly, too few men are all that educable on the issue of misogyny. But some are, and I keep looking for others.
Over the years I have been distressed, heartsick, angry, frustrated, infuriated, and distraught over the sexism I’ve found in the progressive blogosphere. Most of it goes completely unaddressed, which is a shame. I intend to expose and confront some of it and help educate on the subject.
One of the worst offenders is a place called DemocraticUnderground.com, where the administrators are themselves misogynists and are perfectly content to allow if not foster sexism on their forum. But there are others: Rude Pundit, Daily Kos, etc.
Unfortunately, I have precious little time for studying all the blogs and commenting on them, so this blog should never be considered anything but the merest, smallest effort to expose and educate. I welcome tips about other extant examples I haven’t seen.
And as for input from the inevitable misogynists who will probably saunter through here: don’t bother being snarky or misogynist in your remarks. They’ll simply not be approved for publication. This is my little kingdom, after all, and I have no problem NOT honoring what you probably but inaccurately think of as your free speech rights. I’m not here to debate; I’m here to elucidate. If you’re offended by that, go someplace else, such as one of the sites I discuss. You’ll be welcome and happy there. But not here.
What a relief to find your blog. The anti-Clinton sentiment seems to bring out the worst kind of misogyny on DU, and the moderators seem to be clueless about it. Either that, or they are enabling it. Either way, it has been a very unpleasant ride recently.
I am also aghast at what the GLBT community has had to put up with on DU. If the amount of bigotry directed at the GLBT community on DU were directed toward the African American community, there would be a firestorm of protest. As it is, women, GLBT, and anyone who didn’t believe the “case” of racism that Barack’s campaign created against the Clintons (of all people) all get routinely thrown under the bus.
I was posting about exactly that http://paulasmuniverse.wordpress.com/2008/09/01/hello-world/
And got some quite nasty comments (which I, of course, don’t approve:) even more so after I blogged against the Proposition K.
It’s very nice to find a blog like yours. Makes me feel less alone:)
